Happy birthday to one of my all-time favorite vocalists; Richard Patrick. I will always cherish the day that I saw Filter perform with the Stone Temple Pilots. There was great anticipation turned euphoria upon hearing "Sand," transition into "Welcome to the Fold." Adding to the magic was Richard pointing out that they were about to sing "Take a Picture" to the 
now setting sun. My younger friend hadn't listened to Filter before, though Richard's talent was palpable even to her new ear. Dumbfounded, she kept remarking, "How does he DO that!?" whenever Richard transitioned flawlessly from a melodic vocal- to a voice filled with rage. I could not stand how high I was after "Trip Like I Do" and "Jurassitol." How can I take 
hearing any more of my favorite music?! Upon the opening buzz of STP's "Vasoline," my spirit could no longer tolerate the excitement of hearing so much music that I adored one right after the other. That is when I felt what one might consider my soul; go upwards out of my head while remaining attached to my spine. I've had many great memories of 
Filter and other shows, but this 100% sober trip stands out as one of those days that I cannot conceive of my life without it. If I'm lucky enough to grow old with my memories intact, I know I will still be thinking of that night being out of my head and feeling more connected to something transcending- more than I have ever known even to this day. I'm thankful for you & the memories that your talent has given me. Happy birthday, Richard!

Note: I apologize for the heavy nostalgia & lite background info. The Prodigy are one of my favorite bands who I expected to see soon. I am shocked & very sad, but I had to say something. All my love goes out to those who loved Keith Flint & his music.

    See your favorite bands while you can. Just a month ago I shared The Prodigy's tour announcement with friends & reminisced about being a kid sitting in front of a projection TV just dying to see Keith Flint's double mohawk as he flipped the f*** out in a sewer.. Yeah, I've been weird for a while, but this isn't about me. It's about Keith- a performance artist so ingenious that his talent paired with Liam Howlett's music & Maxim's vocals propelled The Prodigy into the USA & opened the previously non-existent door to techno that rock fans of many genres never dared dream of. I was no exception. I went from being alone with my confusing mix of loving all things rock'n'roll such as the Stone Temple Pilots, Goldfinger, 311, and The Doors; yet somehow accidentally acquiring stolen flashing traffic lights to have at my own rave.
     These rave parties were a nearly weekly summer event and a highlight of my youth.  As strange as it may sound, I cannot conceive of my life without the camaraderie I gained from these musical parties that all started with The Prodigy. From there came heavier music and a love of Filter in part to The Crystal Method.
     All personal nostalgia aside, these past years filled with many untimely deaths of musicians generates a sense of urgency to support live music.  Movies, CDs, paintings, etc are wonderful & forever, but experiencing a live show of a band you thoroughly enjoy is not forever. Do not take them for granted. See your favorite bands live and if you are in emotional crisis, please call 800-273-TALK.
]]><![CDATA[New Politics Lost in Translation]]>Fri, 15 Feb 2019 14:10:24 GMThttp://www.lawoodside.com/rock-blog/new-politics-lost-in-translationNew Politics' latest album appropriately named Lost in Translation, has numerous influences that brilliantly translate into an international pop punk amalgamation.  New Politics are innovative with their sampling and the sound effects they add to their music. The degree of precision is comparable to Beck’s seminole album Mellow Gold, though New Politics are a much needed optimistic breath of fresh air.  There is a synchronicity in an unexpected consistency that dumbfounds me.  They have a gift of using the most unexpected samples combined with subtle musical influences from all over the world and yet somehow - it all magically comes together.  I am still discovering samples and sound effects added to their songs from 2013. The many layers keep their songs always feeling new. The upbeat music makes their songs desirable.  Clearly, Lost in Translation does not waver from the unique musical recipe that New Politics fans have come to love.
​     The album opens with one of my favorite songs, “CIA.” It starts with a familiar reggae sample that hooks you immediately. Singer David Boyd has crisp somewhat staccato rap vocals that transition into more melodic pop punk vocals with a very catchy chorus.
    The next three tracks surprisingly have different aspects of vaudeville in their sound.  The very unifying “One Of Us” uses the piano in such a way that it makes the listener feel like they are about to see a play.  The sound was clearly apparent as their music video has a theatrical aspect to it as well. Additionally, the tracl really showcases how New Politics has two highly talented singers.
     Usually when there are two singers in the same band, one is clearly stronger than the other; the second singer usually being used as backup on the records and unable to perform live.  That is not even the least bit applicable to New Politics.  David Boyd is a talented melodic singer with good range and rap undertones.  Offstage singer/guitarist Søren Hansen is friendly and a bit shy, though he has a highly expressive raw singing voice that is uniquely his own.  Few singers are so fortunate to have such a distinctive voice as Søren Hansen.  Some New Politics songs may strongly focus on one singer; though there is always a harmony between David and Søren.  As seen in this stripped down rendition of "One of Us" (see above) even drummer Louis Vecchio provides quality backing vocals.

   The album continues with their international theme adding a vaudeville sound with their eclectic use of the keyboard eliciting wonderment of what is about to happen next - much in the same way an organ evokes anticipation in silent films.  Lyrically, Lost in Translation has a lot of variety.  It has nostalgia, contemplation, and sensuality.  Additionally, the album has inspirational songs about taking control of your life and holding on; though also knowing when to let go.  The latter best describes "Lifeboat."
    “Lifeboat" grabbed me instantly. The vocals were powerful despite initially being backed by just drums and muted music.  It transitioned into an alt rock powerhouse reminiscent of the early 2000’s that had me dancing around my living room. New Politics (above left) spoke about the lyrics meaning and their universal nature.  Above right is the audio track.

​    “Istanbul” really stood out lyrically and musically; especially Louis Vecchio on drums.  There was a hint of muted cymbals with a bass drum that resonated in my chest during each bridge.  The lyrics were also very motivating and uplifting.  Once again, this track showcasing the beautiful blend of Søren's distinctly different and emotion evoking vocals with David's melodic voice that starts off as a comforting whisper and transforms into an uplifting force.
“You got to pick up the pieces of your broken heart
You gotta stitch 'em together, you want a new start
And when you turn the page there will be different words.

You got to live everyday like it's the last night.
Don't need know where you're going before you take flight
And when you break the clouds there will be a different light.”

   Lost in Translation has a good balance of being able to get lost in the music, tune out the world, and wonder what is going to come next.  It is clear that New Politics has an element of fusion.  Between songs there was a clear change of genres, yet a cohesive transition between tracks and styles. Some songs have reggae, African, and Asian influences mixed with pop punk, subtle rap, and rock.  It is a lot to describe, but that is how music should be. It should not be easily articulated, yet easily move the listener. It is hard to tell if the production of this album was meticulous or if everything flowed together serendipitously. I’d wager it was a mixture of both.

    I recommend listening to all four of their albums chronologically & to keep an eye out for their next album. They have been spending time with no other than ska punk and production god, John Feldmann.  While there has not been an official announcement, but if the already insanely talented members of New Politics have teamed up with Feldy for their next album, they are sure to continue with their upwards trend of making even more impressive music. Their latest work may be named Lost in Translation, but New Politics are the Rosetta Stone of pop-punk and fusion. They will undoubtedly explode in the 2019 music scene.

Both the band & album are personal favorite of mine. Collective Soul hardly ever has "filler" songs. Dosage is no exception.

The opening track gets an unwarranted jab from folks for it being in the movie Twilight but whether you love or hate vampires that sparkle; the guitar is wicked insane and the intro is mysteriously seductive. What a way to open an album!  Most people are familiar with "Heavy" and the timeless existential coming of age ​"Run" though lesser known are the renditions of these songs with The Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra shown below.  The live quality of their music is as impressive as their partnership with the youth from their home state.
The single "Needs" (right) did not garner as much attention as it deserved. It has one of the most awesome male vocals I've heard due to Ed Roland showcasing much vocal control & range.  The video is artistic in it's coloring and cinematic concept, though I would question my sanity if I also did not point out how beautiful Ed Roland is with the long hair 90's rocker look.  Judge it for yourself!
"Generate" was a great single.  It is one of those songs with few lyrics, yet it managed to convey emotion.  Below is their Woodstock 99 rendition.  The full Woodstock performance is available on YouTube.  Take some time out of your day to celebrate 90's alternative rock with a dose of Collective Soul!

Being social is highly important to our health, but aside from restaurants and bar hopping, social media and streaming services (both of which I use) have replaced a lot of the in person outings with friends.  Concert going has become a social gem that still has value in our culture. Local bands play often. Many famous bands visit major cities two times a year - that’s more times than you see your childhood best friend who has kids and lives an hour away.  Often times strangers at concerts may be seen more frequently than friends from high school or college.  So, why not get to know them?!

Pick one local band and one big band.  We all hear about supporting local artists.  This is a way to genuinely put that into action.  As an added bonus, you may discover previously unknown bands that make you happy.  This also allows you to meet up with easily accessible local fans whom you jive with if need be.

​Is this not "the face that launched a thousand ships?" wait- wrong reference...  To paraphrase Henry Miller, musical camaraderie is how I am "always ecstatic" and "filled with a divine intoxication."   Is this not an ecstatic face at a social gathering?

Not all bands have a street team, but there are alternatives.  Along with the epidemic of tangible things getting replaced with technological or virtual outlets, social media fan pages have mostly replaced hitting the streets to post flyers for shows.  The upside is that this is a simple, green friendly approach to advertising AND there is also an ease of access to potential friends when your favorite band(s) are not in town.

Camaraderie is crucial for happiness and getting through difficult times.  Had a stressful day at work? Private message Tom from two towns over who also digs that local band. It’s midnight where you are? Message your bud from another country who loves that international alt rock group.  Music is generally more emotional and accessible than say a long movie that slowly draws you in. You will be surprised by the depth of the friendships you make associated with musical acts.  You will also be surprised at the benefits you receive.
If you told me when I was a preteen that I would be offered an appearance in a 311 music video, I would have said "you’re full of it!" or that I wasn’t “cool enough,” but nope.  That offer was my first gift from a Street Team. Was I too young and unable to get my parents permission to be in the video? Yup! But it’s okay. I am now immortalized as one of their fans on the cover of “Mosaic.”  I say I’m doing pretty alright thanks to the 311 Hive!

​More recently I had a craptastic 2018 like most everyone else, but boy did that card from New Politics put some pep in my step!

Other opportunities came from fellow fans turned friends on the Street Teams and fan pages.  How fortunate am I to have hung out with the Stone Temple Pilots as a group and Scott Weiland individually before he passed away?  That is impossible to do now, but thanks to my friends from their fan page I am exceedingly grateful that I got to meet my favorite performance artist (who is also my child’s namesake) before he passed away.  Thank f***ing god!

When luck ran out in my life and I needed a place to stay due to health reasons, my friends of the Mighty Mighty Bosstones were the first to open their home to me- first even before people I knew nearly my whole life.  When I had brain surgery, a band member messaged me that they were praying for me. There I was savoring my favorite band even after they said it was time to go; but I was not listening to it just because of the bliss of the music or the probable risk of deafness- I listened to be reminded of the love, support, and strength that my friends gave me; all friends that I met on a message board!  Forget all the backstage passes, tickets, and discounts. A Street Team gave me peace of mind during my darkest time and they continue to refuel me throughout the year every year. You can have that too!
Be ecstatic.  Live Longer.  Promote your favorite band and local music.  Your support network and happiness will increase along with your life expectancy!  I hope all my fellow music nerds “live long and prosper” in 2019 - by joining a Street Team!  Happy New Year!

    Whatever your dream is, do it no matter what anyone says. The nonbelievers will say you're superficial for wanting to be a model; but they'll ask you on a date the moment you step off the runway. They won't go to your first comedy shows, but they'll ask you for free tickets once you're well known. They'll tell you you're weird for wanting to be a rock star, but they'll be you're "biggest fan" once you're big even if you're an androgynous rocker performing in full on drag.

   Surround yourself only with those who lift you up because the nonbelievers will only believe in you only once they can exploit you.. Family, friend, spouse- their titles do not matter because you are working your butt off. Keep being a dreamer and give an honest effort. The right people who are as strong as you and as brave as you; those are the people who will believe in you. Even good luck will believe in you if you keep believing in yourself. Be free knowing that those who don't believe in you; simply don't believe in themselves.

   So be happy with less regrets by never quitting. Paint those paintings, start that business, film that movie, play those songs, write that book, and model THE $#IT out of that sexy dress!  Happy New Year!  You got this!!

It's no surprise that Goldfinger manages to blend Ska, Punk, Pop Punk, Reggae, and a pinch of metal within just four songs.  Truthfully, those styles and more can all be found in the "12 Days of Christmas" where each day has a different music genre.  Per usual anything John Feldmann touches has superior production.  Sometimes I wonder if Feldmann is one by one making bands sound so great on their albums until the music gods in Goldfinger are the only band left that sound better live.

One of my favorite descriptions of a band was when someone described Stone Temple Pilots as "lovable weirdos." I'm pretty sure that's applicable to New Politics as well. This night was wicked insane! How do you communicate what you care about? Are you harmonious or divisive? Are you coming from a place of fear & anger? Are you upset, but hopeful? Are you coming from a place of love, logic, vulnerability, vigor, & respect? If you are coming from the latter it is scary at first, but your thoughts will be welcomed. Incongruously, people who are too afraid to be vulnerable will come at you in an attacking manner while trying to achieve an agreement through fear & verbal assault. This; however, almost always fails... and the fearful bully knows it. So why do they continue? Because they like the fight. Because they prefer discontentment over vulnerability. Because it's "everyone else's fault." ...because they've gone so long deflecting blame, that they do not know how to feel anything without it. Want to be happy? Live in harmony with the peace of mind knowing that you need and are working on your own journey instead of being consumed with judging others. If you think other people are wrong yet cannot admit your own faults; you'll be stuck an on angry-go-round.
